RESUMO

We theoretically describe and experimentally demonstrate a graphene-integrated metasurface structure that enables electrically-tunable directional control of thermal emission. This device consists of a dielectric spacer that acts as a Fabry-Perot resonator supporting long-range delocalized modes bounded on one side by an electrostatically tunable metal-graphene metasurface. By varying the Fermi level of the graphene, the accumulated phase of the Fabry-Perot mode is shifted, which changes the direction of absorption and emission at a fixed frequency. We directly measure the frequency- and angle-dependent emissivity of the thermal emission from a fabricated device heated to 250 °C. Our results show that electrostatic control allows the thermal emission at 6.61 µm to be continuously steered over 16°, with a peak emissivity maintained above 0.9. We analyze the dynamic behavior of the thermal emission steerer theoretically using a Fano interference model, and use the model to design optimized thermal steerer structures.

RESUMO

A 15-year-old intact male dachshund dog weighing 4.3 kg and a 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog weighing 13.6 kg were referred for examination because of paraparesis and facial paralysis, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracolumbar region and brain was performed. The dogs were premedicated with IV butorphanol, 0.2 mg/kg body weight (BW) and midazolam, 0.2 mg/kg BW. Anesthesia was induced with IV propofol, 4 to 5 mg/kg BW and maintained with sevoflurane in oxygen. The dachshund was orotracheally intubated with a 5.0-millimeter internal diameter endotracheal (ET) tube. During positioning in the MRI room, intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) was applied. The mixed-breed dog was orotracheally intubated with a 6.0-millimeter internal diameter ET tube. After inflation of the ET tube cuff, a leaking test was done by applying positive pressure ventilation. In both dogs, a distinct "popping" sound was heard when positive pressure was applied, after which air leakage from the cuff was evident. Failure to inflate the pilot balloon led to suspicion of a ruptured cuff. Reintubation was completed, both dogs remained stable during anesthesia, and no postanesthetic complications were observed. Rupture of both cuffs, which was visually confirmed, was thought to be caused by overinflation of the cuff, repeated sterilization of the ET tubes, and positive pressure ventilation. Repeated sterilization of ET tubes with ethylene oxide can alter the physical integrity of cuffs. Care should be taken not to overinflate ET tube cuffs, especially when they have been repeatedly sterilized, as cuff rupture may result in failure to provide adequate IPPV. Key clinical message: This report describes 2 cases in which ET tube cuff rupture was noted during anesthesia for MRI.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon is composed of dense connective tissue and is one of the largest tendons in the body. In veterinary medicine, acute ruptures are associated with impact injury or sharp trauma. Healing of the ruptured tendon is challenging because of poor blood and nerve supply as well as the residual cell population. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains numerous bioactive agents and growth factors and has been utilized to promote healing in bone, soft tissue, and tendons. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the healing effect of PRP injected into the surrounding fascia of the Achilles tendon after allograft in rabbits. METHODS: Donor rabbits (n = 8) were anesthetized and 16 lateral gastrocnemius tendons were fully transected bilaterally. Transected tendons were decellularized and stored at -80°C prior to allograft. The allograft was placed on the partially transected medial gastrocnemius tendon in the left hindlimb of 16 rabbits. The allograft PRP group (n = 8) had 0.3 mL of PRP administered in the tendon and the allograft control group (n = 8) did not receive any treatment. After 8 weeks, rabbits were euthanatized and allograft tendons were transected for macroscopic, biomechanical, and histological assessment. RESULTS: The allograft PRP group exhibited superior macroscopic assessment scores, greater tensile strength, and a histologically enhanced healing process compared to those in the allograft control group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest administration of PRP on an allograft tendon has a positive effect on the healing process in a ruptured Achilles tendon.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Daily usage of facial masks during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic influenced on facial dermatoses. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of mask-wearing habits on facial dermatoses. METHODS: A nationwide, observational, questionnaire-based survey was conducted from July through August 2021, involving 20 hospitals in Korea. RESULTS: Among 1,958 facial dermatoses, 75.9% of patients experienced aggravation or development of new-onset facial dermatoses after wearing masks. In aggravated or newly developed acne patients (543 out of 743), associated factors were healthcare provider, female gender, and a long duration of mask-wearing. Irritating symptoms, xerosis, and hyperpigmentation were more frequently observed in this group. Aggravated or newly developed rosacea patients (515 out of 660) were likely to be female, young, and have a long duration of mask-wearing per day. Seborrheic dermatitis patients who experienced aggravation or de novo development (132 out of 184) were younger, and they more frequently involved the chin and jaw in addition to the nasolabial folds and both cheeks. Contact dermatitis patients (132 out of 147) with aggravation or de novo development tended to be female, involve both cheeks, and complain of pruritus. Aggravated or newly developed atopic dermatitis patients (165 out of 224) were more likely to be female, and had a higher baseline investigator global assessment score before mask-wearing. CONCLUSION: Clinical features and factors related to aggravation were different according to the types of facial dermatoses.

RESUMO

2D van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWH) have emerged as an attractive platform for the realization of optoelectronic synaptic devices, which are critical for energy-efficient computing systems. Photogating induced by charge traps at the interfaces indeed results in ultrahigh responsivity and tunable photoconductance. Yet, optical potentiation and depression remain mostly modulated by gate bias, requiring relatively high energy inputs. Thus, advanced all-optical synapse switching strategies are still needed. In this work, a reversible switching between positive photoconductivity (PPC) and negative photoconductivity (NPC) is achieved in graphene/WSe2 vdWH solely through light-intensity modulation. Consequently, the graphene/WSe2 synaptic device shows tunable optical potentiation and depression behavior with an ultralow power consumption of 127 aJ. The study further unravels the complex interplay of gate bias and incident light power in determining the sign and magnitude of the photocurrent, showing the critical role of charge trapping and photogating at interfaces. Interestingly, it is found that switching between PPC to NPC can be also obtained at 0 mV drain-source voltage. Overall, the reversible potentiation/depression effect based on light intensity modulation and its combination with additional gate bias tunability is very appealing for the development of energy-efficient optical communications and neuromorphic computing.

RESUMO

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely recognized endocrine disrupting compound, has been discovered in drinking water sources/finished water and domestic wastewater influent/effluent. Numerous studies have shown photocatalytic and electrocatalytic oxidation to be very effective for the removal of BPA, particularly in the addition of graphene/graphene oxide (GO)-based nanocatalysts. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic degradation of BPA in aqueous solutions has not been reviewed. Therefore, this review gives a comprehensive understanding of BPA degradation during photo-/electro-catalytic activity in the presence of graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts. Herein, this review evaluated the main photo-/electro-catalytic degradation mechanisms and pathways for BPA removal under various water quality/chemistry conditions (pH, background ions, natural organic matter, promotors, and scavengers), the physicochemical characteristics of various graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts, and various operating conditions (voltage and current). Additionally, the reusability/stability of graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts, hybrid systems combined with ozone/ultrasonic/Fenton oxidation, and prospective research areas are briefly described.

RESUMO

The existence of pollutants, such as toxic organic dye chemicals, in water and wastewater raises concerns as they are inadequately eliminated through conventional water and wastewater treatment methods, including physicochemical and biological processes. Ultrasonic treatment has emerged as an advanced treatment process that has been widely applied to the decomposition of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Ultrasonic treatment has several advantages, including easy operation, sustainability, non-secondary pollutant production, and saving energy. This review examines the elimination of dye chemicals and categorizes them into cationic and anionic dyes based on the existing literature. The objectives include (i) analyzing the primary factors (water quality and ultrasonic conditions) that influence the sonodegradation of dye chemicals and their byproducts during ultrasonication, (ii) assessing the impact of the different sonocatalysts and combined systems (with ozone and ultraviolet) on sonodegradation, and (iii) exploring the characteristics-based removal mechanisms of dyes. In addition, this review proposes areas for future research on ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in water and wastewater.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: More than half of acne patients have truncal acne on their chest, back, and shoulders. However, since most studies on acne have focused on the face, data on clinical characteristics and proper management for truncal acne are insufficient. OBJECTIVE: To establish a Korean Acne Rosacea Society (KARS) consensus for experts' perception and treatment patterns of truncal acne. METHODS: We conducted two rounds of the Dephi technique to gather expert opinion and reach a consensus on truncal acne. The first round comprised 48 questionnaires focusing on various aspects such as epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and more, while second rounds consisted of 26 questionnaires. RESULTS: A total of 36 dermatologists (36/38 KARS members, 94.7%) completed this survey. In the first-round survey, consensus was reached on 20 out of the 48 questions (41.7%). In the second-round questionnaire, consensus was achieved on 9 of the 26 questions (34.6%). The most unresponsive lesion to truncal acne treatment was scars (atrophic/hypertrophic). The most commonly used treatments for each non-inflammatory and inflammatory truncal acne lesions were selected to use topical retinoids (78.1% of the responders) and oral antibiotics (93.8% of the responders). CONCLUSION: Our study has yielded valuable insights into the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life of patients with truncal acne. We anticipate that this study will inspire further comprehensive research for individuals with truncal acne.

RESUMO

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the use of disposable plastics and disinfectants. This study systematically investigated the adsorption behavior and mechanisms of benzalkonium chlorides (BACs), commonly used disinfectants, on polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (MPs), considering various factors, such as characteristics of MPs, alkyl chain length of BACs, and environmental conditions. Our results demonstrated a higher adsorption capacity for PP-MPs with relatively hydrophobic properties compared to PET-MPs, where longer alkyl chains in BACs (i.e., higher octanol-water partition coefficients, Kow) significantly enhanced adsorption through hydrophobic interactions. The inverse relationship between particle size of MPs and adsorption was evident. While changes in pH minimally affected adsorption on PP-MPs, adsorption on PET-MPs increased with rising pH, highlighting the influence of pH on electrostatic interactions. Moreover, MP aging with UV/H2O2 amplified BAC adsorption on PP-MPs due to surface oxidation and fragmentation, whereas the properties of PET-MPs remained unaltered, resulting in unchanged adsorption capacities. Spectroscopy studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions as the primary adsorption mechanisms. These findings improve our understanding of MPs and BACs behavior in the environment, providing insights for environmental risk assessments related to combined pollution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the growing demands and challenges faced by patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in accessing healthcare services, our understanding of this access remains poor. This study aimed to investigate the healthcare utilization patterns and timing of nutritional and respiration support in patients with ALS in South Korea. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients diagnosed with ALS at a single tertiary hospital between 2016 and 2019 and followed up for 2 years. We evaluated patient characteristics, healthcare utilization (hospital admissions, outpatient visits, and emergency department [ED] visits), and the timing of nutritional and respiration support (noninvasive positive pressure ventilation [NIPPV], tracheostomy, gastrostomy, and nasogastric tube) at 6-month intervals from the first outpatient visit. RESULTS: Among the 143 included patients, 73.4% were admitted at least once, 18.9% experienced unplanned admissions, and 30.1% visited the ED at least once during the study period. The most-common reason for ED visits was neurological symptoms during the first 6 months (59.1%), followed by respiratory symptoms. One fifth of patients who visited the ED underwent tracheostomy (20.9%) or NIPPV (20.9%). Two years after the first visit, 32.2% used a ventilator, and 13.3%, 26.6%, and 6.3% had undergone tracheostomy, gastrostomy, and nasogastric tube insertion, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: During the 2 years following their first outpatient visit, 20% of patients with ALS experienced unplanned admissions and 30% visited the ED. An active and prompt supportive-care program should be implemented to ensure timely functional support in order to reduce these risks of unplanned admissions.

RESUMO

Boron nitride (BN) coupled with various conventional and advanced photocatalysts has been demonstrated to exhibit extraordinary activity for photocatalytic degradation because of its unique properties, including a high surface area, constant wide-bandgap semiconducting property, high thermal-oxidation resistance, good hydrogen-adsorption performance, and high chemical/mechanical stability. However, only limited reviews have discussed the application of BN or BN-based nanomaterials as innovative photocatalysts, and it does not cover the recent results and the developments on the application of BN-based nanomaterials for water purification. Herein, we present a complete review of the present findings on the photocatalytic degradation of different contaminants by various BN-based nanomaterials. This review includes the following: (i) the degradation behavior of different BN-based photocatalysts for various contaminants, such as selected dye compounds, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, and inorganics; (ii) the stability/reusability of BN-based photocatalysts; and (iii) brief discussion for research areas/future studies on BN-based photocatalysts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To explore the decision-making experiences of older patients with end-stage renal disease who chose to undergo kidney transplantation. METHODS: This was a qualitative descriptive study.Twelve participants aged over 60 years who underwent kidney transplantation were recruited from a kidney transplant clinic in a hospital in South Korea. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted from March to April 2021. The data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four main themes were identified: 1) hesitation towards complex and risky kidney transplant, 2) internal suffering due to social prejudice and limits, 3) taking a step back from the decision-making process, and 4) being rushed into a decision on the brink of death. CONCLUSION: Older patients with end-stage renal disease experience hesitation and difficulties and are passive in the decision-making process for a kidney transplant. They lacked sufficient relevant information and decided to receive transplant surgery, feeling pressured by the recommendations of family and healthcare providers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Healthcare professionals should help older patients with end-stage renal disease make proactive decisions by providing tailored education programs and improving communication between the patients and their family members. Changing negative social perceptions and implementing supportive policies are necessary to resolve the difficulties experienced by such patients. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Patients were involved in the data collection as interview participants in this study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for wait-listed kidney transplant candidates. Since cardiovascular risk is related to a variety of factors and may change with time, longitudinal changes in cardiovascular risk and related factors in candidates need to be investigated. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the trajectory of the cardiovascular risk score and its related factors in patients on the waiting list for deceased-donor kidney transplantation (DDKT). METHODS: This longitudinal study enrolled 144 patients who were registered as candidates for a DDKT at a transplant center in South Korea. During the 5-year follow-up period, 3 candidates on the waiting list were transferred to other hospitals, 19 candidates died, and 31 candidates received kidney transplantation. RESULTS: Approximately 26.6 % of the candidates had a high level of cardiovascular risk, and this increased to 53.2 % after 5 years. A high risk of psychosocial status (ß=0.351, p=.026) was the most significant predictor of cardiovascular risk, followed by higher comorbidity (ß=0.263, p<.001). Comorbidities were a significant factor associated with cardiovascular risk throughout the 5-year period, whereas the duration of dialysis and waiting time were significant only within 1 year after baseline. CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular risk during 5 years on the waiting list for DDKT was associated with multidimensional factors, including psychosocial status before transplantation, comorbidity, waiting time for transplantation, and the duration of dialysis. In addition to managing comorbid conditions, shortening the waiting time and duration of dialysis is important for reducing cardiovascular risk during the long-term care of candidates on the waiting list for DDKT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Natural components that can exert a wide range of anti-hair loss activity with fewer side effects are in high demand. The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-hair loss potential of Silybum marianum flower extract (SMFE) in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: The effect of SMFE on dermal papilla cells was evaluated by measuring cell proliferation and VEGF production in hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs). In addition, to confirm the effect of SMFE on dermal papilla senescence, SA-ß-gal staining and senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP) production such as IL-6 was observed in both replicative and hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 )-induced senescence models. In a clinical study, hair growth was determined by reconstitution analysis after shaving the hair of the clinical subject's scalp and hair area. RESULTS: SMFE increased the proliferation and VEGF production of HFDPCs. It also suppressed cellular senescence of HFDPCs and IL-6 production in replicative senescence and oxidative stress-induced senescence models. The hair density and total hair count at 16 and 24 weeks after using hair shampoo containing SMFE were significantly increased compared with those of the placebo group. CONCLUSION: SMFE has the potential to be used as a natural ingredient for alleviating hair loss.

RESUMO

Influence of the cosolvent on the sorption of organic acids on biochar has not been well understood. For this purpose, the sorption (log Km, L kg-1) of three aromatic acids (benzoic acid (BA, pKa = 4.20), 1-naphthoic acid (1-NAPA, pKa = 3.70), and 9-anthroic acid (9-ANTA, pKa = 3.65) was evaluated as a function of methanol volume fraction (fc = 0.0, 0.25, and 0.5), liquid pH (2.5 and 7.0), ionic composition (CaCl2 and KCl) and ionic strength (0.005 M, 0.5 M, and 1 M CaCl2). A giant Miscanthus-derived biochar (ZPC of 2.86) was used as the sorbent. For all solutes, the sorption coefficients (log Km) measured at pH 2.5 (i.e., pH < pKa) tended to decrease with increasing fc, as expected from the cosolvency model, while the result obtained at pH 7.0 was not fully explained by the same model. The log Km of 1-NAPA in the CaCl2 system was always greater than in the KCl system (p < 0.05) and the impact became pronounced at high pH (>pKa) with increasing fc. Increasing the Ca2+ concentration at fc = 0.0 (from 0.005 M to 1 M) enhanced the value by 0.32 log unit of Km. These phenomena indicate a significant role of dissolved Ca2+ in the liquid phase, most likely due to the formation of cation bridges between aromatic carboxylates and the biochar surface (i.e., [R-COO--Ca2+]-{Biochar-}). A decrease in the dielectric constant of the methanol mixture could fortify the formation of this bridge. Regardless of the degree of cosolvency power (σ), as the number of aromatic rings of solutes increases, Km decreases in the order BA > 1-NAPA > 9-ANTA, where fc = 0.0. In conclusion, the sorption potential of biochar can be significantly weakened by increasing pH and fc, and in the absence of a divalent cation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study systematically reviewed the literature on the effect of home-based supportive care (HbSC) programmes on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with advanced cancer. METHODS: The research question 'Do home-based supportive care programmes for patients with advanced cancer improve their QoL?' was addressed. After registering the plan with PROSPERO (CRD42022341237), literature published from 1 January 1990 to 30 May 2023 was searched on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane database, CINAHL and Web of Science, and reviewed for inclusion based on predefined criteria. This review only included trial studies published in English. RESULTS: Of 5,276 articles identified, 17 studies were judged suitable for inclusion in this review. The components of HbSC programmes included home visits, patient and caregiver education, home nursing, psychotherapy, exercise, telephone consultation, and multidisciplinary team meetings. Nine studies reported improvements in QoL, including social functioning, emotional functioning, and subjective QoL. CONCLUSION: HbSC programmes appear to enable the improvement of the QoL of patients with advanced cancer. The area of QoL that shows improvement could vary depending on the HbSC components. More studies that address HbSC programmes are needed to select patients at the proper time and provide suitable programmes for patients to benefit most.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study reports on the long-term effects of the Better Life After Cancer: Energy, Strength, and Support (BLESS) program, a 12-week social capital-based exercise adherence program for breast cancer survivors (BCS), implemented using a randomized controlled trial design. The study investigated outcomes related to cancer-related fatigue (CRF), quality of life (QOL), physical activity, depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and social capital. METHODS: Participants who had moderate or greater CRF were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 24), consisting of supervised and home-based exercise, or the control (n = 26), who received exercise leaflets. Generalized estimating equations models were fitted for the outcome variables. The assessment points were baseline (M1), immediately after completing the intervention at 12 weeks (M2), 1 month (M3), and 6 months post-intervention (M4). RESULTS: A significant reduction in the total CRF score was found for both groups. We observed a significant time by group effect at M2, indicating a reduction of behavioral/severity CRF scores and a higher increase of physical activity. Also, there was an increase in the QOL score of both groups at M2, M3, and M4, compared to M1. Both groups had reduced anxiety at M3 and M4 compared to M1. The time by group effect for depression, sleep quality and social capital was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This 12-week exercise adherence program improved behavioral/severity CRF and physical activity post-intervention. Both the experimental group and control group showed significant improvements in CRF, QOL, and anxiety domains compared to the baseline, which extended to 6 months post-intervention. RESUMO

We, for the first time, report the nanoscopic imaging study of anomalous infrared (IR) phonon enhancement of bilayer graphene, originated from the charge imbalance between the top and bottom layers, resulting in the enhancement of E1u mode of bilayer graphene near 0.2 eV. We modified the multifrequency atomic force microscope platform to combine photo-induced force microscope with electrostatic/Kelvin probe force microscope constituting a novel hybrid nanoscale optical-electrical force imaging system. This enables to observe a correlation between the IR response, doping level, and topographic information of the graphene layers. Through the nanoscale spectroscopic image measurements, we demonstrate that the charge imbalance at the graphene interface can be controlled by chemical (doping effect via Redox mechanism) and mechanical (triboelectric effect by the doped cantilever) approaches. Moreover, we can also diagnosis the subsurface cracks on the stacked few-layer graphene at nanoscale, by monitoring the strain-induced IR phonon shift. Our approach provides new insights into the development of graphene-based electronic and photonic devices and their potential applications.

RESUMO

Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) elevation during capnoperitoneum can cause adverse cardiovascular and respiratory effects. This study aimed to determine if a sequentially increased IAP affects cardiovascular and respiratory variables in anesthetized dogs and evaluate the effects of the constant-rate infusion of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on cardiovascular and respiratory variables with increased IAP. Five dogs were anesthetized and instrumented, and a Veress needle was equipped to adjust the IAP using a carbon dioxide insufflator. Stabilization was conducted for 1 h, and physiological variables were measured at IAPs of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mmHg and after desufflation. After the washout period, the dogs underwent similar procedures along with a constant-rate infusion of dexmedetomidine. The cardiovascular effects of increased IAP up to 20 mmHg were not significant in healthy beagle dogs and those administered with dexmedetomidine. When comparing the control and dexmedetomidine groups, the overall significant effects of dexmedetomidine were noted on heart rate, cardiac output, and systemic vascular resistance during the experiment. Respiratory effects were not observed during abdominal insufflation when compared between different IAPs and between the two groups. Overall, an increased IAP of up to 20 mmHg did not significantly affect cardiovascular and respiratory variables in both the control and dexmedetomidine groups. This study suggests that the administration of a dexmedetomidine infusion is applicable in laparoscopic procedures in healthy dogs.
